A tangle of steel, staircases, pipes and platforms comes together here to form an impressive industrial landscape. What might appear chaotic at first glance turns out to be a carefully constructed system in which every staircase, pipe and connection has its own specific function. In installations of this kind, everything revolved around efficiency, safety and production. People walked through these steel mazes every day to operate machinery, carry out maintenance or monitor processes.
The photograph clearly shows just how remarkable industrial architecture actually is. Not designed for beauty, but purely for functionality. Yet it is precisely this that creates a powerful image of rhythm, lines and repetition. The different levels, the heavy structures and the enormous pipes reveal the scale on which work was carried out here. Everything had to be large, strong and reliable.
For years, industrial complexes of this kind formed the heart of the economy. Here, steel was produced, energy generated or raw materials processed. Factories such as these provided work for thousands of people and often defined the character of an entire region. Nowadays, many of these installations are disappearing from the landscape or being repurposed as heritage sites.
This is precisely why industrial heritage remains important. It shows how technology, labour and industry together shaped a world that is still visible in our cities and landscapes. This photograph captures not only a steel structure, but also a piece of history relating to work, construction and production.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
