About the artwork

Danaë (Ancient Greek: Δανάη) is a character from Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Eurydike and Akrisios, king of Argos. She is the mother of the demigod Perseus.

When an oracle predicts Akrisios will be killed by a grandson, Akrisios decides to lock up his only daughter Danaë in a bronze tower until she is too old to have children.

Often, and again, the woman is depicted partially naked, in this case half topless so that one breast emerges from beneath the blue robe into the tower of bronze.

All in all, a sexy and sensual erotic picture.

Jan Gossaert, aka: Jean, Iennin, Janin, Jennyn; Gossart, van Henegouwe, de Weale.... (Maubeuge?, c. 1478 - Antwerp?, Oct. 1, 1532) was a southern Dutch painter, printmaker and designer. After his probable birthplace of Maubeuge in the county of Hainaut, he was also often called "Jan Mabuse" and one sometimes encounters the Latin form "Malbodius" as well.

In the first decade of the 16th century, Gossaert belonged to the so-called Antwerp mannerists.
