About the artwork

The Stadspaleis or City Hall on Dam Square, built in 1648, was inaugurated in 1655 and completed in 1665. This building was an expression of the power and status of Amsterdam at the height of its Golden Age.

The inauguration took place on 29 July 1655: at half past seven in the morning, a service was held in the Old Church and in the New Church.

The Royal Palace Amsterdam (known as the Palace on Dam Square and sometimes still as the Town Hall on Dam Square) is a palace on Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam. The palace is used by the Royal House as a reception palace and for exhibitions.

The building is seen as the Netherlands' most important historical and cultural monument of the Golden Age.

Jan van Call (Nijmegen, 1656 - The Hague, 1703 or 1706) was a Dutch painter and engraver.

Van Call was a self-taught artist who became known for the many landscapes, townscapes and buildings he drew and engraved. He made a long journey via Germany and Switzerland, along the Rhine, to Rome, producing many works along the way.
