Thetis was a figure in Greek mythology. She is best known as the mother of the hero Achilles.
The nereid Thetis was loved by both Zeus and Poseidon. When a prediction was made that she would bear a son more powerful than his father, both gods rushed to marry her off to King Peleus. She resisted this by changing into various forms, but eventually Peleus caught her and married her anyway. During the wedding, the famous contention apple was thrown among the guests. The child born was Achilles.
