About ‘Jean Brusselmans Antwerp bridge’
As a modernist, Brusselmans was fascinated by the structure of cities and landscapes. He did not paint lively city scenes, but rather tranquil urban architecture in which forms are given weight. In this cityscape, the bridge becomes the supporting form of the composition. The arch spans the image like a solid mass of colour, composed of rusty oranges and cool greys. Buildings and water are simplified into blocks; perspective gives way to flat surfaces. The water does not reflect nature faithfully, but lies like a calm expanse of colour beneath the bridge. This gives the scene an almost timeless tranquillity. Brusselmans' brushwork remains visible and dry, emphasising the material presence of paint. This painting shows how he approaches the city not as a story but as a construction. Architecture becomes painterly order, a world of stability and balance in which movement gives way to concentration.
