About ‘Jean Brusselmans Port of Ostend’
The Belgian coast and harbours provided Brusselmans with motifs in which water, architecture and air come together in clear structures. In this harbour scene, buildings and boats are reduced to simple, solid areas of colour. White façades stand out against blue-green water and a clear sky. Yet everything remains firmly anchored in the plane; nothing seems fleeting. The water does not reflect nature faithfully, but functions as a calm field of colour. This gives the painting great stability. Brusselmans' brushwork is visible and dry, emphasising the material quality of the paint. The harbour does not become a lively scene, but a constructed world of form and balance. The painting shows how he simplifies light and space into an almost architectural composition.
