About "Jean François Janinet, Vertumnus and Pomona, ca 1776"

About the artwork

Vertumnus was a god of autumn, who especially guarded the orchards and bestowed a rich abundance of fruit. Although his Latin name indicates him as a true Roman god, myth has it that he came over to Rome from Etruria and chose a place to live in one of the busiest parts of the city.

People told of his love for Pomona, who was also a goddess of the gardens and was always busy grafting, pruning and watering, in short, with everything that concerned the care of the gardens. She was so dedicated to this that she wanted nothing to do with love.

Here the man seduces the woman and the guy has his hand under the breast of the maid. The tit is naked so that the goddess is partly topless.

All in all a sexy and sensual erotic picture with romance.

In 1774 Louis-Marin Bonnet developed another technical innovation: a printed border of gold leaf. Janinet, who had been Bonnet's pupil, adopted this practice.

Medium colour wash-way etching and engraving

Jean-François Janinet or François Janinet, born in 1752 in Paris where he died on 1 November 1814, was a French engraver and balloonist.

Active towards the end of the Ancien Régime and during the French Revolution, who took an innovative approach to color engraving.
