On 29 August 1618, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was arrested at the Binnenhof on suspicion of high treason. The old statesman was imprisoned, convicted and finally beheaded on 13 May 1619 at the Binnenhof after nine months of imprisonment. Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619) is still regarded as one of the greatest statesmen in Dutch history, the builder and founder of the Dutch state.
