Bach chose his good friend Gainsborough to paint his portrait for the gallery of famous musicians formed by his master, Father Martini, in Bologna; this second version may have been painted for Bach himself.
Thomas Gainsborough was an English artist mainly known for his portraits and landscapes. Together with Sir Joshua Reynolds, Gainsborough was one of the most important and successful artists of the eighteenth century.
