The collector Hjalmar Gabrielson of Gothenburg, Sweden to whom the work is dedicated, had purchased from Kurt Schwitters '"Kirschbild". This work of art, in which the collage plays only a subordinate role, is based on a conception of loose color forms that follow an amazing color harmony. Coincidence, one of the special charms of Schwitterscher collages, is almost impossible. The highly painterly component of the sheet reveals a reversal towards the decorative, which was already latent in the early collages.
Kurt Schwitters (Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany 20 June 1887 - Kendal (United Kingdom), 8 January 1948) was a German painter, typographer, publicist and poet, who became famous for his collages, his sound poems and as the creator of Merz.
Around 1917 he joined the expressionists. In 1918, he sought to join 'Club Dada', a Berlin group of Dadaists.
