Nijō Castle (二条城, Nijō-jō) is a castle located in the Nakagyō-ku district in the Japanese city of Kyoto. The castle consists of two rings of defences, both surrounded by a moat. It includes the ruins of Honmaru Palace, Ninomaru Palace, several outbuildings, and gardens. The total area covers 275,000 square metres. The castle has been recognised as a World Heritage Site with 13 other monuments as part of the Historical Monuments of Old Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu) since 1994. It belonged to the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period.
