Kinderdijk is located in the Alblasserwaard polder. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands and one of the most famous Dutch tourist attractions (now UNESCO World Heritage Site), but at this late hour it was fortunately not too crowded. During the golden hour, the sun came out from behind the grey clouds to illuminate the row of windmills with the last rays of the day.
