Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis. The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a water-loving bird of the kingfisher family (Alcedinidae). It is a striking bird, with its contrasting blue and orange colours, but it is also a very shy species, rarely seen. Alcedo atthis is the only kingfisher species that occurs in northern Europe including the Netherlands and Belgium, at least the subspecies Alcedo atthis ispida. Most kingfishers live in the tropics[2].
The kingfisher is a typical fish-eater (piscivore) and is thus strongly bound to water. It prefers running waters. In most of its range the species is common, but in some areas the kingfisher is threatened with extinction.
