The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a bird in the family of kingfishers (Alcedinidae). It is a striking appearance due to its contrasting blue upperparts and orange parts, but also a very shy species that is rarely seen. This species is the only kingfisher species found as far north as Europe, including the Netherlands and Belgium. Most kingfishers live in the tropics[2].
The kingfisher is a typical fish-eater and is therefore strongly tied to water. Because of its preference for steep banks to breed in, they are often found near running water, as steep banks naturally form there due to erosion. Stagnant fish-rich waters with vegetation also provide an excellent habitat. The species is common throughout most of its range, but in some areas the kingfisher is threatened with extinction.
