About the artwork

Kingston-upon-Hull, or Hull for short, is a port city at the confluence of the Hull and Humber rivers on the Humber Estuary in northern England. Hull was probably founded as Wyke On Hull by monks of Meaux Abbey in the 12th century in their search for a port to export their goods. It was first mentioned in 1193 and renamed Kings-Town Upon Hull under King Edward I in 1299. This became a prosperous trading town with an important fishing port and military port. Having been named UK City of Culture in 2017, Hull has attracted attention as the cultural hub of the North, with numerous museums and architectural and maritime attractions. Especially in spring, Hull is a feast for the eyes with its hyacinths and other spring flowers. Queens Gardens in the heart of Hull city centre is ideal for an al fresco lunch, a game of football or a leisurely stroll. It was originally the first dock to be built in Hull. In 1930 it was transformed into a picturesque garden setting with trees, ponds and fountains. More recently, Queens Gardens has been the venue for popular events in Hull such as the Freedom Festival and the YUM Festival. Attractions such as Hull People's Memorial, the historic Old Town, the Museums Quarter, Hull Marina, The Deep Aquarium, St Stephen's Hull shopping centre, Hull Truck Theatre, KCOM Stadium, the University Of Hull (in Newland) and Ferens Art Gallery round off a visit to Hull.
