The Mekong is the most important lifeline and traffic artery for Laos. The mighty river rises in the Tibetan highlands and pours into the China Sea in the Vietnamese delta. The Mekong flows through six different countries: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
A few hours on the river are hardly enough to grasp the sheer size and historical significance of the Mekong, but they at least give an impression of the important role the river plays in today's Laos as well. Tourists like to use so-called slow boats to explore Laos from the Mekong. The boat trips from Huay Xay to Luang Prabang are popular with tourists. Only slowly are a larger number of tourists discovering Laos. Many visitors are fascinated by the tranquillity and friendliness of the Laotians and the naturalness of the landscapes.
