The history of the Häntzschelstiege is only 60 years old, but absolutely worth telling. The via ferrata was built in the 1960s on Rudolf Häntzschel's own initiative, and he worked on it for a whole 10 years. He did not have an official permit; he collected some of the necessary material from scrap yards in the surrounding area. Nevertheless, his route up to the Affensteine quickly grew in popularity. Finally, around the year 2000, basic renovation work took place. So you can walk the staircase today with a clear conscience, provided you are sufficiently sure-footed and free from vertigo.
