A longtail boat lies on the beach of Koh Ngai in the glittering dawn, captured in monochrome silence. The tide has receded and the sea leaves a filigree pattern of grooves in the wet sand. The air is still, except for the breeze that brings the pha phra - long, colourful strips of fabric - to life. They flutter powerfully at the bow of the boat, as if they want to speak to the wind. There is a quiet dignity in their dance, a touch of spirituality. Fishermen have placed them, not out of adornment, but out of faith: as offerings to the spirits of the water, as pleas for protection, luck and a safe return home.
The boat, old and marked by salt water, now rests firmly anchored on the sandy bottom, while the outline of the Andaman Sea and a lonely rocky island lie in the haze in the background. The mountains almost seem to float - dreamy, far away, as if they were part of another world. In this black and white composition, the timeless meets the spiritual, the simple meets the meaningful. It is a moment between ebb and flow, between this world and the next - and the fluttering cloth is the only thing that is still moving.
