The rowan is a fairly undemanding tree. This makes it easy for the plant to find areas for growing even in Saxon Switzerland, where the soils are partly sandy. The bright red berries are, of course, the eye-catcher. In the past, they were used to attract and capture birds. Hence the German name Vogelbeere.
