About the artwork

Spaarndam is a picturesque village in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands.

Spaarndam has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally founded as a fishing community, the village later developed into a strategic port and trading post.

The layout of Spaarndam is characterised by narrow streets, traditional Dutch houses and picturesque canals. The village centre is dominated by the iconic 16th-century Kolksluis lock, which regulates the water level in the area and symbolises Spaarndam's maritime heritage.

One of the most striking sights in Spaarndam is De Slokop. This historic windmill dates back to the 19th century and is still in operation. Visitors can tour the windmill and learn more about its significance in Dutch history and culture.

Spaarndam is known for its connection to the Dutch folk tale of Hansje Brinker. Near the lock is a statue depicting the story of the boy who saved his village by plugging a leak in the dike with his finger, as a tribute to this legendary story.

The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking and boating. Visitors can explore the scenic paths along the riverbanks, picnic in the lush meadows or take a boat trip along the Spaarne River.

Overall, Spaarndam is a charming village full of history and natural beauty, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Dutch life and culture. Its idyllic location, historical sights and serene atmosphere make it a wonderful destination for a day out.
