The name of the Koppelpoort is probably derived primarily from coppel; an Eastern Middle Dutch word meaning common meadow, which stretched along the Eem; later, the gate complex was thought to be a combination (coupling) of a water gate with two land gates on either side. The gate lies to the northwest of the city of Amersfoort. The water gate allows the city to discharge water from the Veluwe into the Eem; the old name (first mention 1427) is therefore Spoeipoort (Grote en Kleine Spui; oldest mention Spoeije: 1389). Also, the Koppelpoort could keep water in the city's canals! Indeed, during an archaeological survey in 1997, information was obtained about the foundation method. It was also discovered that the Koppelpoort (by means of a wooden bulkhead) also had a clear function in regulating the city's water level. To keep the water, against stench development, in the city's canals, the sluice at the Spui was built later (ca 1930). Source: Eemland Archive The photo was shot on 2 July 2016.
