About the artwork

The Koppelpoort is a city gate in Amersfoort. It is a combination of a land and water gate. The name is probably derived from the East Middle Dutch word coppel meaning common meadow. The area outside Koppelpoort was a common area. So the name does not indicate that the gate has two functions. The gate is located on the northwest side of the inner city, where the moat system - fed by the Heiligenbergerbeek from the southern watergate Monnikendam - leaves the inner city and merges with the Flierbeeksingel - the eastern remnant of outer moat belt (pictured left) which originated from the Barneveldse Beek (formerly Flierbeek); the now-demolished western part - short Beek in the Bekenstein area - used to run along what is now called the Stadsring (pictured right) and originated from Heiligenbergerbeek. After passing the (former) port area De Koppel, this is joined by the later dug Valleikanaal - in turn fed by the Barneveldse Beek - and the whole of the waterways merges into the river Eem. The name Koppelpoort refers to the area outside the gate which was and is called the Koppel. The area served as common pasture land, among others, for the farms that had come to lie within the walls after the construction of the second city wall.
