The LVR Industrial Museum stores more than 350,000 objects in its depot in Oberhausen, which is located in the former main warehouse of the Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH). The well-known industrial designer and Bauhaus architect Peter Behrens designed the imposing building that now bears his name. Since 1998, it has served as a central collection depot for the LVR Industrial Museum. Exhibitions are also presented here.
The famous architect and industrial designer Peter Behrens (1868-1940) designed style-defining buildings for industry and administration. This included the main warehouse commissioned by Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen in 1920. His design followed the formal language of the Bauhaus and New Objectivity and thus embodied the ideas prevalent in industry at the time: to rationalise and concentrate everything operational as far as possible. The building, which was around 90 metres long, was completed in 1925. The result was a horizontally emphasised, cubically oriented structure with a steel skeleton construction.
