The panorama of Malcesine taken shortly before sunset.
Malcesine, with its picturesque old town and well-preserved Scaliger Castle, is one of the most popular holiday resorts on Lake Garda. The castle is also famous for Goethe's description of it in his Italian Journey. Malcesine is located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the Veneto region, right at the foot of the Monte Baldo mountain massif, which rises up to 2218 metres. The small town is often referred to as the pearl of Lake Garda.
Lake Garda, one of the northern Italian lakes, is the largest lake in Italy, named after the municipality of Garda on the eastern shore. The northern shore of the lake is surrounded by the two thousand metre peaks of the Garda mountains, such as Monte Baldo, while the southern shore lies in the northern Italian lowlands. Lake Garda stretches across the three Italian provinces of Trento (to the north), Verona (to the east) and Brescia (to the west). These provinces belong to the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto and Lombardy, which share Lake Garda.
