Lake Pukaki is a beautiful blue lake located on the edge of Mount Cook N.P.. Many tourists only see this lake when they drive via the west side of this lake in the direction of Mount Cook N.P.. Still, the lake itself is definitely worth a visit. On the other side of the lake, where the average tourist doesn't come, is a beautiful road that leads all the way along the eastern side of the lake. This road is not asphalted but basically easy to prepare. The road, the Hayman road, can be reached via the SH8, 8 km east of Pukaki village. The road is about 40km long but because of all the stops you can easily take half a day for it. If you have even more time, there are a number of beautiful off the beaten path campsites along this road. Lovely quiet camping along a clear blue lake, who wouldn't want that.
