About the artwork

Male nudity in this Greek mythology. Laokoön is a Trojan priest of Apollo and Poseidon at the time of the Fall of Troy.

The man warns the Trojans of the horse's danger; he has seen through Ulysses' ruse. When he sees the horse for the first time, he waves his lance into the back of the sacred peril and hits one of the Greek soldiers in the ear.

The men are exposed on the artwork, so legs, hips, abdomen, torso and buttocks are in this painting of the men.

Making use of every available resource winding line, sinister colours and illogically conceived space, the artist projected a non-aerated feeling of doom. Wavy contours and anti-natural skin tones contribute to their haunting appearance. The striking setting takes this visionary late work by El Greco to an apocalyptic extreme.

Domenikos Theotokopoulos (Fodele, Kandia or Iraklion on Crete, Greece 1541 - Toledo, Spain 7 April 1614), commonly known as El Greco, was a painter who worked mainly in Spain.

After a training in the art of icons on Crete, El Greco travelled to Rome, where he studied under Titian. His style of painting belongs to Mannerism, an art movement of the High Renaissance.
