The world-famous Mont-Saint-Michel is a distinctive sight. Hermits settled on the rock in the fifth century, and throughout history it has grown into an impregnable fortress.
The spiritual community on Mont Saint-Michel was founded around 700 by Saint Aubert, bishop of Avranches, who came to pray in solitude on the mountain, then surrounded by the forest. Legend has it that the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, who had visions of a church on the rock. On three occasions, Michael ordered Aubert to erect a church on that spot; after Michael touched him with his finger, burning a hole in his skull, he started building a house of worship on the rocky point, close to the shore, in 708. The church was to be built on the model of the sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo sul Gargano in the province of Foggia in northern Apulia, which was also dedicated to the archangel Michael.
