Lemons and Chairs

by Marieke Wouters

‘Lemons and Chairs’ captures a familiar scene in which simplicity and colour come together. Two chairs stand patiently in the background, whilst bowls full of lemons rest on a sun-drenched table. The vibrant shades of yellow contrast beautifully with the deep purple and warm orange accents, creating an image that feels both energetic and inviting. The work evokes long afternoons around the kitchen table, conversations that unfold slowly, and the beauty of everyday rituals. The atmosphere of this collage is warm, optimistic and welcoming. The empty chairs suggest a human presence without anyone being visible, creating space for memories, imagination and personal stories. The lemons bring freshness and light to the composition and give the work a Mediterranean feel that immediately evokes a sense of holiday and relaxation.

This collage is inspired by the small moments of everyday life: a bowl of fruit on the table, a chair waiting for company, the morning light bringing colours to life. By placing ordinary objects at the centre, it creates an ode to the simple life, in which mindfulness and tranquillity are more important than perfection.

The work is constructed from hand-torn and carefully arranged types of paper, combined with oil pastels and watercolour. The layered forms, subtle textures and visible edges give the collage an artisanal character. This combination of collage art and painterly areas of colour creates a rich visual language full of depth and personality.

‘Lemons and Chairs’ fits beautifully into a Scandinavian interior, a modern, colourful interior, a Mediterranean style or an eclectic décor.
