Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood in Zaandam located in the municipality of Zaanstad. It is located on the Zaan, opposite Zaandijk and next to the Juliana Bridge. It is a well-known open-air attraction with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year (1.6 million in 2014).Formally, it is not a museum. It was set up with the intention of preserving historical heritage. The residential houses are also rented out to residents, so that not only tourists come to the site.The name comes from the entrenchment that Diederik Sonoy, governor in the service of William of Orange, had built in 1574 to stop Spanish troops.
