Lighthouse Nieuwe Sluis near Breskens by Claire van Dun

Lighthouse Nieuwe Sluis near Breskens is the oldest surviving cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. It has stood there for centuries, calm and steadfast on the edge of Zeelandic Flanders, where the land gradually merges into the sea.

The tower has a remarkable history. In 2015, it was transferred by the Belgian government to the Breskens Lighthouse Foundation; since then, it has been open to the public and the light is burning again. With a range of approximately 14 nautical miles, it still points the way across the water.

On a crisp morning atop the dike along the sea, I captured this moment. The tower small but certainly in view, surrounded by the vast silence of the Zeeland landscape. Such an image gives you the space to slow down for a moment. To feel what it is like when things are simply allowed to be as they are. In all their simplicity.
