About "Love between Paris and Helena, Jacques-Louis David - 1788"

About the artwork

Paris is a figure from Greek mythology. He was a son of the Trojan king Priamos and his consort Hekabe. The man saw an opportunity to seduce the goddess Helena while her husband was away.

The woman herself came to him with her followers, Eros, the god of love, Himeros, the god of sweet desire of love, with the Chariten, with Pothos, the god of desire, and Hymen, the god of marriage. Assisted by Aphrodite, the guy finally persuaded the maid to flee with him.

Here are the goddess and the young man in a Greek environment. He is naked with only a few cloths wrapped around him so that his legs, hip, belly and torso are on the nude portrait. The goddess is wearing a sheer dress, a transparent dress and is braless, so her belly, torso and breasts are on the portrait.

Jacques-Louis David (Paris, France, 30 August 1748 - Brussels, Belgium, 29 December 1825), often referred to as David for short, was a French painter of "sober" history pieces and portraits. He was the leading figure of Neoclassicism and influenced many 19th century French painters. He took his subjects from classical sources.
