Sometimes a small gesture says it all. Two prairie dogs gently touching one another, their paws intertwined, their snouts pressed together as if the world around them has momentarily come to a standstill. What appears touching at first glance also reveals something about the strong social nature of these remarkable animals. Präriehunde live in close-knit colonies where contact, recognition and cooperation are vital. Through gentle touches, sounds and body language, they maintain their bonds with one another.
In this photograph, it’s all about connection. The warm light accentuates the fine texture of their fur, whilst the tranquil background draws all attention to the intimate moment between the two animals. The composition reinforces the sense of balance and harmony: two small inhabitants of the prairie who seem to trust each other completely. The power of nature photography often lies in such unexpected moments. It is not the spectacular or the imposing that takes centre stage, but rather the tenderness that animals can show towards one another. This gives the photograph an almost human quality, without losing sight of their natural behaviour. “Love under the prairie sun” brings together warmth, gentleness and tranquillity in a single image. A photograph that appeals not only to animal lovers, but also to anyone who is moved by small, sincere moments of connection.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
