About ‘Ludolf Bakhuysen. The IJ off Amsterdam with frigate ’

Marine painter and etcher Ludolf Bakhuysen (1630-1708) was born in Emden, Germany, and came to Amsterdam in 1649. There, he learned his trade from landscape painter Allart van Everdingen and marine painter Hendrick Dubbels. His work also shows strong influence of marine painter Willem van de Velde I. Apart from harbour views and ship portraits, Bakhuysen painted many dramatic, stormy seascapes and shipwrecks. It was said of him that he often took to the water in bad weather to study weather effects closely. He also depicted numerous incidents in Dutch maritime history. After father and son Van de Velde left for England around 1672, Bakhuysen was one of the last and most important painters in this genre.
