Just before the sun went down, I took this photo at Nörvenich military airport, near Cologne (Germany) of this Panavia Tornado. All alone in the freezing cold, I was waiting for perhaps one of the now landed aircraft to take the long way back to the hangar. Suddenly, out of nowhere, under these brilliant light conditions this Tornado appeared.
This Tornado is very popular among spotters and has many nicknames such as: Tonka and Torrie. Not everyone can appreciate these nicknames so I'll just stick to
'Tornado'.
This fantastic aircraft is a dying breed: with the advent of Stealth aircraft, it is hopeless in a dogfight and also not invisible on radar. In Europe, the Tornado is still in use only by the Italian and German air forces and has more than earned its spurs as an interceptor fighter and certainly also as a tactical bomber.
The beauty of this photo is of course the Tornado itself but also the brilliant lighting conditions and the paraffin you see rising from the double exhaust at the rear. They make this for me a photo I have to keep looking at.
