About ‘Luncheon on the Grass, Édouard Manet’
Le déjeuner sur l'herbe is a painting by French painter Édouard Manet. The work is from 1863 and hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (Dutch 'Lunch on the grass') shows a picnic of two contemporary dressed men (a brother of Manet and his brother-in-law Ferdinand Leenhoff), a nude and a half-naked woman. The position of the three figures in the foreground is an obvious reference to Raphael's The Judgement of Paris, which Manet knew in a copy by the copper engraver Marcantonio Raimondi, but it is also inspired by Titian's Pastoral Concert.
