The Maassilo is a former grain silo and grain elevator in Rotterdam's Maashaven, which has been in use as an entertainment and events venue since 2004. The oldest part of the largely reinforced concrete silo was completed in 1911, containing 128 silos with a total capacity of 20,000 tonnes of grain at the time.[1] A second part was completed in 1930, right next to the oldest part, and a final extension took place in 1951.
In 1986, 70 people still worked at Maashaven Silo BV, but that number subsequently declined due to EC measures to encourage the use of European grains, so there was less demand for the grain brought into the port of Rotterdam.[2] Around 2000, it was decided to move the grain storage to a newer part of the port. Since 2004, the Maassilo has been used as an entertainment and event location, initially (until the end of 2006) by discotheque Now&Wow. On the front side of the building, a business incubator building housing several creative entrepreneurs was opened in 2008.
