About the artwork

The Maastunnel building and the Euromast are two iconic structures that characterise Rotterdam's skyline and both have a rich history.

The Maastunnel building, visible on the banks of the River Maas, is the recognisable entrance building to the Maastunnel, the oldest traffic tunnel in the Netherlands. Built in 1942, this tunnel connects the north and south sides of Rotterdam and is an impressive feat of infrastructure and architecture. The building itself, designed in the New Objectivity style, has a functional and modern design with clean lines and geometric shapes. The Maas Tunnel is still a crucial traffic artery for the city and a symbol of post-World War II reconstruction.

In addition, the Euromast, with its height of 185 metres, stands as a beacon in the city. Opened in 1960 on the occasion of the Floriade, the tower was designed by architect Huig Maaskant. The Euromast offers visitors spectacular views of Rotterdam and the surrounding areas. In 1970, the tower was raised with a Space Tower to keep up with competing high-rise buildings. The Euromast is not only a tourist attraction, but also a symbol of Rotterdam's progressive and modern architecture.

Together, the Maastunnel building and the Euromast represent Rotterdam's past and future, with both structures connecting the city: one below ground and the other high above it. This combination of functionality and aesthetics makes this duo a favourite subject for photographers and architecture lovers.
