Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Cultural History Museum traces the city's importance in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
Construction of the Stern Bridge began in May 1914, but was demolished after a few months. It was not until 1918 that construction was continued by the city architect Taut. When completed in 1922, the Sternbrücke was considered one of the most modern river crossings in Germany.
At the end of the Second World War, the steel arch of the bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht. Reconstruction began in the early 2000s and the bridge was reopened for the 1200th anniversary on 1 May 2005.
