An expedition around Spitsbergen (Svalbard) is the most impressive trip a human being can make, and then be lucky enough to be able to visit the eastern side of this archipelago. Ice and bad weather can easily throw a spanner in the works and force a human being to choose a different route. Luckily not this time.
The light conditions in the polar regions change all the time, no hour is the same, and often show beautiful color spectacles. The picture was taken at almost 80 degrees north latitude near the island of Kvitoya in the Barents Sea, one of the most remote islands I have ever visited. Often the island that was discovered in the 18th century is shrouded by its ice cap in a dome of mist and clouds which produces fantastic images. The photo shows the emptiness of the Arctic Ocean where only seabirds skim the waters in search of food and where polar bears and walruses can survive in the harsh cold. The North Pole in all its simplicity and beauty.
