A homing pigeon, also carrier pigeon in Belgium, is a domestic pigeon, a domesticated descendant of the rock pigeon,[2][3] pigeons bred by artificial selection that, after spending a period of time with its owner, if transported elsewhere and released, find their way back to their original home in ways not yet fully understood.
Racing pigeons have a phenomenal sense of orientation. Pigeons brought far from home, up to hundreds of kilometres away, often know how to find their home again unerringly. This is why in the past they were used to convey messages; this is also how a sport, pigeon racing, came into being, in which it is a matter of which pigeon is home the fastest after a number have been released together. source wikipedia
