When you live in a medieval hill town like Pienza in Tuscany, Italy, the houses and apartments are packed close together and there are no garden spaces. So every bit of space is used at the front of the houses to have plant pots, usually terracotta, filled with plants to add greenery. In this image we can see that someone has been making good use of the space available where a house juts out slightly from the one next to it, creating a little niche that the owner has filled with all manner of plants including a climber.
