Man and woman at a spinning wheel, Pieter Pietersz. (I), ca. 1560 - ca. 1570
oil on panel, h 76cm × w 63cm
Despite their individual features, it is uncertain whether this elegantly dressed couple was intended as a portrait. The tableau does have a clear message: the man with his drinking jug is seducing the young woman, who is looking directly at us. She must choose between spinning wheel and drinking jug, between virtue and vice.
