About the artwork

The mantle baboon (Papio hamadryas) is an ape of the genus baboons (Papio). The mantle baboon was considered a sacred animal by the Ancient Egyptians. Males grow to be 70 to 95 centimeters long, with a shoulder height of 50 to 65 centimeters and a body weight of 15 to 20 kilograms. Females grow 50 to 65 centimeters long, with a shoulder height of 40 to 50 centimeters and a body weight of 10 to 15 kilograms. The tail grows to between 38.2 and 61 centimeters in length.
The mantis baboon has sexual dimorphism: males look completely different from females. Females and males that are not sexually active have grayish brown fur, with a bare, pink face and back. Adult, sexually active males, on the other hand, are much larger and have long, silver-gray fur that is lighter on the cheeks, tail tip, and around the buttocks. The hands and feet are darker in color. On the neck and shoulders, the male has long mane. The mantle baboon is an opportunistic omnivore. It feeds on grasses, buds, fruits, roots, shoots and invertebrates. For food, the animals can travel up to 13 kilometers. They are active during the day; at the end of the afternoon the baboons gather on steep cliffs, where the animals sleep together. Here they are relatively safe from leopards, their greatest enemy.
