About the artwork

Print with a map of Utrecht with of course the city, but also the Haarlemmermeer, Naarden, Weesp, Muiden, Amsterdam, Woerden, Montfoort, Leerdam, Vianen, Culemborg, Buren, Rhenen, Wageningen, Amersfoort and Marken.

Top left the title cartouche surrounded by a river god, Diana, putti with the coat of arms of the province of Utrecht and a man's figure. Bottom right two scale bars: Hora itineris / Een ure gaens; Milliare Germanicum commune / Een gemeene Duytsche myl van 15 in een graet. Around them a triton, a mermaid and several putti. Graduations along the edges.
Place of manufacture: Amsterdam
Physical characteristics: etching and engraving, hand-coloured

Romeyn de Ho(o)g(h)e (Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands, September 10, 1645 - Haarlem, June 15, 1708) was a Northern Dutch etcher, drawer of 3,500 prints, caricaturist (under the pseudonym Marlois), painter, iconographer, goldsmith, enameller, book illustrator, publisher of maps, inventor of a way to print cotton, lawyer, and writer of historical-political works.

The De Hooghe family came from Ghent; Romeyn's father married in Diemen. In 1673, Romeyn de Hooghe married Maria Lansman, the daughter of a minister from Edam.
