The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) is a small predator that belongs to the mongooses. He is also called "earth male" and inhabits all parts of the Kalahari in southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa). The meerkat mainly eats insects, spiders, scorpions and snails. Of all mongooses, the meerkats are the most social. The meerkat is not threatened and can be found in houses.
In Afrikaans and English meerkats are called "meerkat". As a result, the name 'meerkat' is sometimes erroneously copied in Dutch from films, such as Timon from the Disney film De Leeuwenkoning. In Dutch, however, meerkat is a name for a group of monkeys (Cercopithecus). In addition, the grey monkey and the red monkey are mongooses, just like the meerkat.
