Tipping mill at Kinderdijk. The Netherlands. The seesaw mill is the oldest type of polder mill in the Netherlands.
This model is the only one in Kinderdijk. A seesaw mill, De Blokker (also Blokweerse Wip), from the Blokweer polder which was built in 1620 and burned down in 1997. The mill has been fully restored and operational again since 2000.
At Kinderdijk there are nineteen mills in the northwest of the Alblasserwaard, a region in the province of Zuid-Holland.
They are polder mills, which pump up the water from the lower polders.
In the Alblasserwaard, the mills move the water in two stages. First, the water from a polder is pumped into a storage basin water. At Kinderdijk, two large storage basin waters converge. These are the Water Board for the Boezem van de Overwaard and the New Water Board for the Boezem van de Nederwaard. They discharged into Elshout, northwest of the Alblasserwaard and waters down to the river Lek.
