Netherlands, Kinderdijk, 05-09-2011 The nineteen windmills of Kinderdijk symbolize the way the Netherlands deals with water. For a long time they kept the land dry that was plagued by subsidence and floods: the Alblasserwaard. The windmills at Kinderdijk provide an extra beautiful picture at night between September 5 and 10, 2011. They will be illuminated by floodlights during the 20th Molenlichtweek (Windmilllight Week). All 19 windmills in Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be illuminated. Kinderdijk received World Heritage status in 1997. According to Unesco, the mills in South Holland are the example of the Dutch fight against water. Over the past 3 years, 14 mills have been restored. The restoration of the last one, a mill more than 270 years old, was completed in July. Photo: Hans Hordijk
