During the winter and spring period, there are often millions of razor blades along the coast of the Netherlands. How do these razor blades get to the beach and why are there so many of them?
Razor clams occur in large numbers and actually belong in warm seawater. In winter, they do not survive the cold seawater of the North Sea and die en masse. As a result, millions of razor clams wash up on the North Sea beach.
The stranding is often accompanied by other marine animals such as starfish, sea urchins and crabs. They too do not survive the cold sea. For the gulls, this is a real meal.
