Porto (also known as Oporto) is a Portuguese municipality and port city in north-western Portugal, on the Costa Verde.
Porto is built on the north bank of the Douro River. It is Portugal's second-largest city after Lisbon. While the municipalities of Sintra and Vila Nova de Gaia have more inhabitants than the municipality of Porto, unlike Lisbon and Porto, not all of them live in the city (in the case of Vila Nova de Gaia) or village (in the case of Sintra) with those names. In 2021, the city had 231,800 inhabitants; the Greater Porto metropolitan area then had 1.8 million. The city was cultural capital of Europe in 2001, along with Rotterdam.
Porto is best known as the place of origin of port (o)wine, which is aged in Vila Nova de Gaia (located opposite Porto on the south bank of the Douro River), and from there exported all over the world. The town used to be called Cale and later Portucale, from which the country name Portugal is derived.
