The town of Potosí, perched at an altitude of 4,070 metres in Bolivia, is famous for its mining history and its crucial role in the colonial economy. Dominated by Cerro Rico, this mountain once teemed with silver, attracting thousands of miners during the colonial era. Today, the landscape of Potosí bears witness to this glorious but also tragic past, where extreme wealth coexisted with terrible working conditions.
Colourful houses line the steep slopes, illustrating the contrast between mining heritage and modern daily life. Although silver is less abundant, mining continues, mainly for other minerals.
To visit Potosí is to discover a fascinating page in South American history, marked by colonisation, global trade and the resistance of local peoples. From its colonial streets to its arid landscapes, this city remains a unique destination.
